Investigation - Horseheads NY Home
Location: Horseheads, NY
Evidence Found: None.

Comments: On December 4, 2009 The Scientific Paranormal team was called in to investigate a home in Horseheads NY. The client had a few major claims that consisted of object movements, apparitions, the feeling of being touched and disembodied voices. Upon arrival we had an open mind and our debunking skills ready at hand to take on the tasks that were presented to us.

The first claims we sent out to debunk was that of object movement. According to the client they had a plaque that would fall off the wall and land face up along with a chandelier that would sway back and forth. As far as the plaque went our team found no evidence to support or refute this claim. The investigation of the plaque lead us to believe it was a natural phenomenon for that it is possible that the plaque was not properly placed on the wall and could have been knocked loose at some point. The Chandelier was also found to be inconclusive and or natural for we found no evidence to support or refute this item either. We did notice during the investigation that the dining room, where the chandelier is located, is the area in the house that where the clients smoke. It is very plausible that the smoke from a cigarette could have very well caused an illusion of movement. Also the chandelier moves with the slightest touch, and it is possible that the cause of the movement could have been from a very slight seismic activity that cannot be felt if it had been going on at the time.

The next claim was of various apparitions seen inside and outside of the home. Our team first investigated the claims on the interior of the home which seemed to be targeted around the hallway and the bedroom doorway. We found no evidence to support or refute these claims. Throughout the investigation, a high Electro-Magnetic Frequency (EMF) was recorded in the hallway. We found that there was a significant difference in the EMF reading when the lights were on (high reading) to when they were off (low reading). This is likely due to unshelled wiring in the home. A High EMF (anywhere above one milligauss) can cause interesting side effects such as headaches and hallucinations. The outdoor apparitions were said to appear in the backyard and heard in the cul-de-sac, which was out front of the house. We found no evidence to support or refute this claim either. Because no evidence was found, this claim cannot be labeled as paranormal, but because the activity has been supposedly experience by neighbors as well, it cannot be immediately dismissed as natural either. One should always be aware of possible human contamination when any activity happens.

Next we investigated the claim of disembodied voices and noises. Because of the room’s close proximity to the hallways, and the presence of multiple animals in the room, the activity likely is of natural origin. The high EMF could be affecting the client’s audio perception. Sounds that are normal to everyday life are heard out loud, when there really is silence.

Lastly, our team had one personal experience in the master bedroom. The experience was of the master bedroom door opening on its own. Upon further investigation we found that a second before the door opened slightly an investigator had touched the door handle, which may have caused the movement. We also found upon further investigation that the door must be completely latched or it will open immediately. The delay between the investigator touching the door and its opening makes it likely to be an unnatural phenomenon; however it cannot be listed as paranormal evidence because the door was touched so soon beforehand. Overall, due to the lack of decisive evidence found in the home and the severely high EMF found in the hallway where much of the visual and auditory activity manifested, it is quite possible that much of the activity is caused by the high EMF or manifested because of it. It is very important to remember the side effects from being exposed to high EMFs such as paranoia and nausea to hallucinations. We believe that the case that was presented was a great opportunity for our team to go in with our debunking skills to set aside some of the worries of the home owner, which we feel, were done successfully.
